UON Management Board Visits Embu University College

The VC led the UON management team on a tour of Embu University College and pledged that the Universiy of Nairobi is committed to ensuring the EUC meets its objectives while offering quality and holistic higher education. He challenged the college team, led by the Principal, Prof. Daniel Mugendi, to navigate through the process towards receiving a charter, and change the academic sector. Present during the visit was the Director Centre for Self Sponsored Programmes (CESSP) Prof. Julius Ogeng’o. In a presentation on the college, Prof. Mugendi revealed that the institution seeks to generate, advance and disseminate knowledge through training, research and innovation for the development of humanity. He noted that since the college was transformed into a UoN constituent college, major achievements have been realized.

To date, the college has developed infrastructure such as laboratories, hostels, lecture rooms, bio-digester and a staff lounge, admitted students to degree programmes, established strategic partnerships and linkages and developed a strategic plan.  The college is exploring public-private-partnerships, has developed a physical master-plan and is constructing a new office block. EUC has a record 1,257 students, an academic body of 49 with a support staff of 173.

According to Prof. Mugendi, inadequate infrastructure, reduced capitation from the government, staff attraction and retention and low self-sponsored students admissions, are some of the challenges the college is facing.

During the visit, the University of Nairobi management also toured the college facilities including the landmark Dam 5
